This month marks 5 years of blogging for me! Before I get started, click the picture to the left to go to the Gallery. I have to say these are some of my favorite (and maybe best) yet. They were taken with a macro lens at the Fort Jackson passage of the Palmetto Trail. It's fall, and this time every year, nature does it's own little "crash landing" into winter. So...Crash Landings. We all make them. Sometimes they are physical, we get sick. Sometimes they are the emotional ones. We persevere. The worst ones come from expectations and misunderstandings. We get mad at someone we love for expressing their feelings, or thoughts and ideas. Sometimes that doesn't match our expectations or we have completely misunderstood them and/or the situation. It doesn't make anyone right or wrong, and that is not what it's about. Everyone has a different perspective, and it's valid. So we should all remember that, and hug the people we love a little longer. Life is too short. Don't have a crash landing. "There will always be misunderstandings in life. That’s a given. The question is, how much damage will they do? How will expectations and misunderstandings affect our fulfillment? Our overall happiness? And I’m not talking about the “Three’s Company” style of misunderstandings, which result from mistaken identity or eavesdropping. Those eventually get resolved with a cheesy group-hug, until the next episode. No, I’m referring to the more insidious kind of expectations and misunderstandings. Chances are, you’ve experienced serious misunderstandings that were initially ignored or swept under the rug to fester for a while. Then they popped up later, rearing their ugly heads and negatively impacting cooperation, communication, and teamwork. Combine the perils of communication technology with our predisposition not to want to talk about the stuff that’s in the middle of the room, and you have a perfect storm of anti-communication. It is the source of all misunderstanding. And misunderstanding is the source of 99% of our problems.” Remember relationships are not easy. Adrienne Rich said about relationships

"We cannot be the generation that allows elephants to disappear. I pledge that I will not buy or sell ivory, and I will support a moratorium on ivory products in my country." ------------------------------------------------- So here is Mumford and Sons, "Where Are You Now?". Video from YouTube is below the lyrics, just press play below. This song reminds me of what happens if you do have a crash landing, check out the lyrics: It came to the end it seems you had heard As we walked the city streets You never said a word When we finally sat down Your eyes were full of spite I was desperate, I was weak I could not put up a fight You were strangely less in pain Than you were cold. Triumphant in your mind Of the logic that you hold You said no one would ever know The love that we had shared. As I took my leave to go It was clear you didn't care. And I hear of your coming And your going in the town I hear stories of your smile I hear stories of your frown Where are you now? Where are you now? Do you ever think of me In the quiet, in the crowd? --------------------------------------------------- Here is a great article on "How to paint with fire". It is done by artist Spazuk, who "has developed and perfected a unique technique that allows him to use the flame of a candle or the flame of a torch as a pencil to create his paintings with trails of soot. Using various tools, he intuitively sculpts the plumes of soot left behind in response to the shapes that appear on the canvas." Here's how to get electricity from a phone jack in case of an emergency. If the power is out and you need to charge your cell phone to make an emergency phone call, don’t worry. There are plenty of potential power sources all around you. One of them is the phone line. Net neutrality is a hot issue again this month. If you are not familiar, is the principle that internet service providers such as cable and phones companies and governments should treat all data on the internet equally, not discriminating or charging differentially by user, content, site, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or mode of communication. From Demand Progress: "Just six months ago, real Net Neutrality rules (under Title II) were thought impossible. But since then: First we forced the FCC to open the door to them. Then we forced the FCC to take the idea seriously. And last week, Communications Daily -- the main trade publication for the telecom industry -- called strong Title II Net Neutrality rules inevitable. We sure hope they're right! But it's no time to let down our guard. The tides have turned in Washington because of how hard we’ve fought this fight. Now, it's clear we need to make sure everyone at the FCC feels like they have to stand up for the public interest and help save Net Neutrality for good. That's why we're unveiling a new website that will allow you to call a randomly selected top official at the FCC to demand real Title II Net Neutrality -- just once, or every day until the they announce their decision. Big cable has the money, released their hounds and sic them on Congress -- and believe me, they've done just that: Scores of lobbyists have descended on Congress, twisting arms and calling in the favors they think they're owed for their big campaign contributions. But if enough dedicated Internet defenders can step up and call as much of the FCC from now until they make their decision, we can win this battle. We took something that seemed impossible -- getting real Net Neutrality out of the FCC -- and made such a stink that Communications Daily is now calling it "inevitable." We've accomplished the impossible together before: The Internet can do incredible things if we band together and take smart, strategic actions to move the needle. Take action to demand that the FCC save the open Internet! --------------------------------------------------------------- The new Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer, is AWESOME. Next Tuesday, November 4, ABC will air a Marvel Comics special "Marvel 75 Years: From Pulp to Pop!" and will show even more "Avengers: Age of Ultron". The YouTube video is below, just hit play :-) --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Someone who had a "crash landing" was Ada Lovelace. This is a fascinating, yet sad, historical read. How Ada Lovelace helped invent computer programming in the 1800's... but in her time, she was a tabloid celebrity and daughter of Lord Byron. You can check it out here: "How Ada Lovelace Became Famous Again". --------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is some audio here on Brain Pickings that is a fantastic listen about criticizing others ideas & thoughts, tolerance, and the ability or inability to change ones own mind. We have this ability, or uncomfortable luxury, to do so and are stubborn and have immovable opinions. I believe I have been guilty of this, as I believe we all have. Enlightening lesson, not only culturally, but in our own daily lives. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are having severe problems, this ARTICLE ON RESILIENCY is a great read, or please find someone to talk to.
